Job Description

Gravity Well is looking for a 3D Character Artist to join our team. Come and help craft this exciting new game world with us!

We are looking for an artist with a love for stylized characters, creatures, attention to details and who is willing to embrace critique and grow as an artist with us. You will work closely under our Art Team leadership and multiple other disciplines in order to help meet the needs for animation and gameplay while balancing artistic goals.

What You'll Do:

  • Create stylized 3D characters, creatures and related props, taking them from initial blockout to final in-game implementation.
  • Be eager to learn and grow under the close guidance of the character team, welcoming feedback as part of the process.
  • Collaborate closely with the art team and other departments, iterating frequently to ensure that the asset aligns with the art direction, maintains high quality, and is optimized for gameplay.
  • Engage in learning different game development processes and contribute creative ideas that elevate the characters and bring fresh perspectives.
  • Participate in playtesting and engage with team members in order to enhance the game through collaborative development.

Ideally You'll Have:

  • A solid understanding of forms, anatomy, shape language, design and composition.
  • Good knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance, Marmoset and other 2D/3D tools.
  • Experience in Unreal Engine 4/5.
  • Experience and love for stylized character art and painterly textures.
  • Experience creating PBR Materials.
  • Great ability to translate 2D concepts into appealing 3D models.
  • A solid understanding of deformable topology for animation.
  • A solid understanding of Retopology, UVs and baking techniques with an eye for cleanliness and optimization.

  • Game industry experience working with other artists and the game team.

  • Traditional Art knowledge and experience.
  • Strong observation skills and understanding of nature and the world around you.
  • Ability to collaborate and adapt.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with team members located globally.
  • Unreal Engine Blueprints and Shaders experience.
  • Scripting knowledge that aids in ideating workflow optimizations.

What You’ll Get:

The base pay for this role is:

  • Character Artist: $100,000 to $125,000 USD per year;
  • Senior Character Artist: $125,000 to $175,000 per year; 
  • Principal Character Artist: $175,000 to $200,000 USD per year;

(or equivalent in your local currency). We pay fairly across our global team regardless of your location but it will differ based on factors such as experience, qualifications etc.

This position is for US and Canadian residents. We have an office in California if you like to come to an office, but most employees work from home across different US time zones and that's totally fine.
